PEMF and Peak Performance
Peak performance is only achieved if the horse has appropriate nutrition and exercise, as well as being free of pain, injury and chronic illness.
Pulsed Electromagnetic Field (PEMF) Therapy has been used by trainers in the USA for many years and is also being adopted by Australian trainers and studs. It is augmenting other treatment modalities used by vets, farriers, chiropractors, etc. in the search for peak performance.
PEMF works by directing electromagnetic energy at tissue (found in bone, muscle, organs, etc.) that is made up of trillions of biological cells. Pain, injury and chronic illness are the result of damaged cells, which are the targets for PEMF Energy.
PEMF boosts cellular energy to a level that is essential for healing and restoring cells to optimal performance, resulting in faster resolution of pain, injury and chronic illness. Improved blood and lymph circulation are also key outcomes of PEMF Energy Therapy. Appropriate nutrition and exercise are also essential for restoring and maintaining optimum health and peak performance.
Important Things to Understand about PEMF Therapy
- PEMF recharges cells with energy, but the healing process is not complete until the cell is restored to optimum healthy functioning – PEMF needs to be applied regularly (every 2-3 days) until the process is complete, otherwise the cell may regress to its previous unhealthy state
- PEMF produces broad outcomes (e.g. improved circulation of blood & lymph), as well as targeted outcomes (e.g. reduction in chronic pain in a knee or hip joint)
- PEMF complements traditional and alternative forms of veterinary and other therapy practices – in some cases PEMF has been found to be suitable to replace these practices
Preparation for Therapy Sessions
In preparation for a PEMF Therapy Session, it is important for the horse to:
- feel comfortable and relaxed
- be hydrated by drinking sufficient good quality water
- be well rested (preferably not tired or fatigued)
- have an owner/handler in attendance who should be able to discuss issues related to pain, injury and chronic illness
Protocols During Therapy Sessions
During a PEMF Therapy Session, it is important to:
- observe the body and identify how it is responding to the PEMF, as this may indicate issues about which you may not have been aware
- assist the owner/trainer gain a deeper understanding of the relationship between biological cells and the functioning of the equine body, as well as the effects of PEMF on cells and the way they are positively impacted
- ensure that the horse is not subjected to PEMF energy levels that make the horse uncomfortable/anxious
Responses after Therapy Sessions
After a PEMF Therapy Session, typical responses may include:
- improved strength, energy, mobility & posture
- reduced pain & inflammation
- improved circulation (blood & lymph)
- release of toxins, which is why it is important to ensure full hydration to help flush toxins from the body
- flatness, necessitating a period of light exercise
- muscle soreness, necessitation light stretching and exercise
